Creating with Cannabis
The Basics
Anyone can make their own edibles. Really! We’ve created this “Basics” tutorial series to provide a plain-language introduction to the science and practice of preparing cannabis for consumption. We round it out with a tried & true gummy recipe for you to start with!

Canna-Science
Here’s a plain-language explanation of how cannabis affects the body, and how cannabis is impacted by cooking.

Canna-Science for Cooking
We’ll keep this simple—no chemistry degree required. The how-to instructions will be in the next section, for now we’ll just look at the science. Cannabis is packed with compounds called cannabinoids—you’ve probably heard of THC and CBD. But here’s the catch: the raw plant doesn’t just serve up THC ready to go. Instead, it mostly contains THCa or CBDa—the non-psychoactive “acid” versions.
Translation? Raw bud is basically inactive. You could eat a handful and feel… nothing (other than regret). Luckily, it’s super easy to change that!
Step 1: Activate it (a.k.a. Decarboxylation)
To get those classic edible effects, you need to convert THCa into THC.
This happens through a little heat in a process called decarboxylation (or “decarbing” if you want to sound like a pro). That heat knocks off the “a” from THCa and leaves you with activated THC.
Step 2: Extract It to Make It Useful
Technically, you could eat a decarbed bud… but it’s much tastier blended into food. THC loves fat, which is why classics like brownies work so well—they’re full of it (fat, that is). So, make it easier to use in cooking and infuse your decarbed cannabis into oil (more on this later). The fat carries the THC, making it easy to dose and cook with.
Pro tip: Recipes with fat = better infusion = better effects.
One Quick Word of Caution…
THC may love fat, but it hates high heat and long cook times.
Skip frying or anything that smokes your oil. Stick with baking or recipes that cook low and slow.
Most baked goods cook fast enough and stay within a THC-safe temp range.
Bottom line: Decarb it, infuse it, and cook smart. The better your process, the better your edible—and your experience.
Prep Work: Activate & Infuse
By now, you know why decarbing matters. Luckily, it’s simple—and really kind of satisfying.
First, Spread the flower in a single layer on a baking sheet—keep the buds whole. Skip grinding—it’ll just pull out extra plant flavors you might not want later.
Second, bake at 240°F for 30-40 minutes. You’ll see the green turn golden brown and a little crispy—that’s your sign it’s done. If it’s still green? Give it more time. If it’s starting to smell like burnt popcorn… you went too far. Heads-up: Decarbing smells. A lot. If that’s a problem, look into decarb devices designed to trap the smell and automate the process.
Third, you’re ready to infuse. Add the decarbed bud to a saucepan. Pour in just enough oil to cover the cannabis. Heat low and slow—aim for around 180°F. You want small bubbles, not a boil. Big bubbles = too hot and THC starts degrading. Stir every 20-30 minutes. Infuse for 2-3 hours. When it’s done, strain through cheesecloth or a fine mesh. Coffee filters work in a pinch but will slow you down and absorb some oil. Also, pressing the plant material gets you more oil but may pull bad flavors—your call.
What Oil Should You Use? Your choice. Canola, Olive, Coconut—all work. Coconut oil pulls out the most THC but has a flavor (and hardens at room temp). Choose what fits your recipe.
Now… How Strong is It? (Let’s Do the Math—Quickly)
You’ll need:
Starting flower weight
THCa % on the label
THCa to THC Conversion = .877
Infusion Efficiency = 80%
Example:
3.5g flower at 25% THCa = 875mg THCa total.
Adjust for decarb conversion (THCa to THC): 875mg × 0.877 = 767mg THC
Account for 80% infusion efficiency: 767mg × 0.8 = ~614mg THC in your oil
Let’s say you ended up with ½ cup of oil:
That’s 614mg THC total
307mg per ¼ cup
~77mg per tablespoon
Once you know your total THC and oil volume, you’ve got your potency—scale up or down depending on the recipe.
Final Tip:
THC settles in infusions – shake often to ensure it’s well mixed! Also, THC breaks down with too much heat or too long on the stove, so skip frying and stick to low-temp recipes like baked goods or dressings where the oil shines (and the THC stays put).

Homemade Infused Gummies Recipe
Here we have a basic homemade gummy recipe using basic tools and methods. Most grocery stores hold carry these ingredients – the lecithin may be the most difficult to source. It’s necessary, though, because it allows the oil and water to mix and evenly distribute cannabinoids in the gummies. We tend to use a specific brand of gelatin dessert mix, one that is well known for its jiggly properties and is the subject of many hospital food jokes, but generic will work just fine! Use whatever flavor you like – just note the size as 6oz may be the “family” size package. Lastly, if you can’t find citric acid specifically, it can be omitted. It just adds a nice brightness to the finished product.
You’ll Need:
¼ cup infused oil
6 oz flavored gelatin dessert mix (large box)
2 tbsp unflavored gelatin (one packet)
½ tsp sunflower or soy lecithin
¼ cup cold water
¼ cup granulated sugar + 1 tsp citric acid
Potency tip: This recipe yields approximately 250ml of gummy volume. If using 2ml gummy molds and aiming for 5mg THC per gummy, you’ll need 625mg total THC in your quarter cup of infused oil.
Let’s Get Cooking:
1. Combine oil, lecithin, and cold water over low heat in a small saucepan.
Whisk until it’s all blended—no clumps.
Keep the heat low and stir until it’s one happy mixture.
2. Mix in the Gelatin
Combine the flavored mix and unflavored gelatin in a bowl first and mix well—trust us, it helps.
Slowly whisk the gelatin mix into the warm oil blend.
Stir until fully incorporated.
3. Cook Low and Slow
Cook for 10 minutes over medium-low heat. Never let your gummy mix boil.
Stir the whole time. Watch the texture shift—it’ll thicken and smooth out.
If foam shows up, kill the heat. Keep stirring, then slowly return to heat.
4. Fill Your Molds
After 10 minutes, you’re ready to pour.
Use a spouted pot or a spoon—whatever gives you control.
Stir between pours if needed. If it thickens too fast, warm it up again.
Level out your molds with a spatula if needed.
5. Cool + Coat
Tap the mold tray on the table to surface and pop air bubbles.
Chill in the fridge or freezer for 2+ hours, or let them sit at room temp in the molds overnight.
Mix sugar and citric acid for sugar coating
Pop out the gummies and toss ‘em in sugar
6. Cure + Store
Cure (ideally on parchment paper) at room temp for 24–48 hours, flipping at least once.
Don’t skip this—curing impacts texture.
Store in an airtight container—fridge preferred for longer shelf life.
Make It Your Own!
Our mug cakes can be made and enjoyed right out of the pouch, in as little as two minutes of opening the package in your kitchen. But, there’s no reason you can’t dress it up a bit if you’re looking for something special. Use your imagination, or consider any of the following to make it your own.
Chocolate Chips
